Tales from an Intrepid Travellerin China during the Cultural Revolution
Wednesday 19 October 2022 10:30 to 15:00
Un moment chez Mémé, Bookstore and Café in Mougins
Birgitta Lindqvist, Swedish writer, was one of the very few
foreigners in China when she arrived with her Swedish diplomat husband in the middle of the Cultural Revolution. She cycled across Beijing dressed in a Mao costume as no other clothes could be bought. People would gather around the young blond woman and every morning The Party sent a Chinese teacher to her home to teach her Chinese from Mao’s Little Red book, the only book allowed in the whole country.
Years later, as a well-known writer in Sweden and in the middle
of a difficult divorce Birgitta come in contact with a young
woman poet in China whose poetry she started to translate into
Swedish, English and French. She travelled to China to meet
her and her beautiful poetry helped her to overcome this difficult
time in her life.
Birgitta who lives in France and in Sweden will tell us about
some of her experiences from the Cultural Revolution including
meeting with political leaders at the time and will read poetry
from Yu Xiu Hua.
